Before the visit of Prof. Rutten and his students in 1930, only once geological investigations were made on Bonaire. These took place in 1885, when Prof. Martin paid a short visit to the island. Though the stay of Prof. Martin on Bonaire lasted only four days, he nevertheless succeeded in composing a rough scheme of the geology of the island. I am very glad and I count it as an honour to have the opportunity of prosecuting the work of Prof. Martin. A visitor to Bonaire must, even before reaching the road of Kralendijk, observe the great topographical difference between the northern and the southern part of the island. In the beginning of the year 1885 Aruba was surveyed as to its geology by K. Martin. Although this surveyer stayed only a few days on the island he succeeded in obtaining a clear view of the general geological features¹). It is, however, very well understandable that during our stay²) some corrections could be introduced in the geological map of Aruba and in the older ideas concerning the genesis of some rocks. Beside the above quoted publication by Martin some other geological literature about the island exists; the latter is not worth mentioning here being of no great importance.

The author has paid a short visit to the island of Saba in the month of April 1885. Saba is the northernmost of the curved row of neovolcanic islands, which stretches from Saba towards Grenada and the Grenadines. This row of islands together with a more or less parallel, though much less marked, outer curved row of non-volcanic islands separate the Caribbean Deep from the Atlantic Ocean. The island Saba is the upper portion of a much denuded volcanic cone, which rises to a height of 850 m. above sea-level, from a depth of over 600 m. Saba lies at a distance of 4 km., from the northeastern rim of the Saba-bank. The latter forms a remarkable submarine plateau, about 2100 km² in extent. Notwithstanding the fact that representants of this group were already known to Prof. C. G. Ehrenberg, the great micropaleontologist of the first half of the 19th century and subsequent authors have mentioned them from various localities, they have remained almost unknown. Their organic nature too has not always been recognised. In 1843 Prof. Ehrenberg referred them to his group „Polygastern” with the name Actiniscus; in his „Microgeologie”, however, they were considered as inorganic bodies and mentioned as „Crystalldrusen"", „Seheibensternchen"" or „Crystalloids"" (Bibl. 2, p. 115, p. 156, etc.). Isolierte Skelettnadeln von Spongien sind aus Gesteinen der verschiedensten Formationen des Indischen Archipels erwähnt worden, sie finden sich unter anderem auch in vielen tertiären Kalken und wahrscheinlich von Süsswasserspongien herrührend in Diatomeën-Erden. Vollstandige Schwammkörper, auf deren Aufzählung wir uns hier beschränken wollen, sind bis jetzt, abgesehen von vereinzelten Funden im Jura, nur aus zwei Formationen, dem Perm und der Trias von Timor bekannt geworden.

Devon: Die Favosites-kolonie fand sich im Noordrivier in Süd Neuguinea zusammen, mit anderen Fossilien, die von Martin besehrieben wurden und für die er ein jungpalaeozoisches Alter annahm. Neuerdings hat Stehn aus derselben Gegend Atrypa reticularis L. var. desquamata und Orthothetes cf. umbraculum Schloth. beschrieben, hierdurch wird auch ein devonisches Alter des Favosites wahrseheinlich. Carbon: Von Sumatra sind aus den „Padangsche Bovenlanden"" sowohl carbonische als auch permische Korallen bekannt. Merkwürdigerweise fanden sich in den Fusulinenkalken des Goegoek Boelat bis jetzt nur Lonsdaleia-kolonien, aber keine der für das Perm Timors so charakteristischen Einzelkorallen.

Following the example of Professor K. Martin I have as far as possible used the subdivision given by P. Fischer in his „Manuel de Conchyliologie et de Paléontologie Conchyliologique”. For the stratigraphy I used the system of E. Haug: „Traité de Géologie”. Following the general custom, however, the Rhaetian is counted to the Trias and the Berriasian as formation parting the Jurassic from the Cretaceous.

There was one great drawback to the decision of the commission for editing this jubilee volume in honour of Prof. Martin in the form that is here shown. It was namely impossible to call in the help of the most competent person for compiling the chapter on the mollusca. Aublet based Tontelea and its only named species, T. scandens, on material he collected in French Guiana, illustrated as pl. 10 in the original publication. Aublet’s specimens are incorporated in the herbarium of J. J. Rousseau (now located in the Paris Herbarium in herbier Denaiffe) and also in the Herbarium of the British Museum. The sheet in herbier Denaiffe was identified by Lanjouw and Uittien (1940) as the original for Aublet’s pl. 10, which shows a flowering twig, analysis of a flower, and a detached leaf much larger than the leaves on the twig. From a photograph of this sheet it appears that the inflorescence is reproduced only in fragmentary form in the drawing. The present bibliography on pelagic Tunicates has been compiled over a period of 4 years, mainly by the first author. It is meant, not as an official publication, but as a working aid for students of pelagic Tunicates. It comprises about 1300-1400 different titles of books and articles. For obvious reasons the mere listing of all those titles in alphabetical order would be impractical for specialized demands. Splitting this list in as many subheadings as possible in a way like the Zoological Record would be ideal. However, many articles and books are difficult to place under one heading; the same titles would have to be mentioned under a number of different headings. With as many headings as possible this would mean a multiplication of the 1300-1400 titles...

Biodiversity can be considered to be a human appreciation of the biological entity diversity. Diversity can be expressed numerically on the basis of taxa found, but it can also be expressed as the contribution of a specimen to the diversity, for which a formula is proposed. Diversity is the sum of the taxonomic or numerical diversity, and the ecological, genetical, historical, and phylogenetic diversity. Moreover, each group, or larger taxon, has its own characteristic diversity. These types of diversity are considered separately. One formula is tentatively proposed to calculate the overall diversity. Diversity in nature is variable, which is demonstrated in a diagram for comparison with societyinduced diversity changes. A Biosystematic Study of Neohattoria herzogii (Hatt.) Kamim Naturalis

Neohattoria Kamim. is a monotypic genus of the Jubulaceae (= Frullaniaceae) with a single species, N. herzogii (Hatt.) Kamim., known from central to northern Japan and the southern part of the Kurile Islands. The present genus was segregated from Frullania by Kamimura (1961; sub. nom. Hattoria Kamim. nom. illeg., non Schust., 1961) on the basis of the branching type, the shape of the first leaf and underleaf on branch, the total lack of secondary pigmentation, the uniform cell structure of the stem in cross section, and the strongly toothed leaf lobes. The generic concept of Neohattoria was greatly expanded by Schuster (1970), who included eight species and classified them into two subgenera, subgen. A Biosystematic Study of Nipponolejeunea Hatt. (Hepaticae) Naturalis

The genus Nipponolejeunea Hattori was established by Hattori (1944) based on Pycnolejemea pilifera Steph. from Japan. Its primary important generic characters include 1) the two gynoecial innovations, 2) the triplicate perianth, and 3) the long cilia on leaf- and underleaf-margin. Hattori (1944) also assigned Pycnolejeunea subalpina Horik. to Nipponolejeunea, thus admitting two Japanese species in that genus. Since then, the genus Nipponolejeunea has been repeatedly discussed, especially by Mizutani (1961) and Schuster (1963) from taxonomic points of view. The branching and innovation types of Nipponolejeunea were described by Mizutani (1970); Inoue (1976) proposed the subgeneric separation of the two species, as subgen. A black, non-troglomorphic amphibian from the karst of Slovenia: Proteus anguinus parkelj n. ssp. (Urodela: Proteidae) Naturalis

A morphologically distinct cavernicolous salamander Proteus anguinus from southeastern Slovenia (Bela Krajina) is described as P. a. parkelj ssp. n. It differs from P. a. anguinus in a dark pigmentation, fully developed eyes, a skull with broader and shorter bones and fewer teeth, a voluminous jaw musculature that gives the head a bulky appearance, a proportionally longer trunk with a higher number of vertebrae, shorter extremities, and a shorter tail. Most of these traits are considered to be plesiomorphic character states. An allozyme analysis over 40 loci has shown the new dark pigmented taxon to be genetically similar to a white and troglomorphic neighbouring population from Stična (DNei = 0.23). The post-Glacial history of the forests in the Netherlands has been reconstructed fairly well by pollen analysis of several bogs. At the same time stratigraphical investigations shed some light on the way in which these bogs had been built up, i.e. on the plants by which, in the various forest periods, peat was formed. Though these data are quite interesting, they do not give a good impression of the entire synchronal herbaceous flora, as they are limited to the peatbuilding plants. As yet very little is known of the rest of the vegetation (water-, marsh- and land-plants) of the late-Pleistocene and Holocene periods.
